Must-Know Rules on and off the River
The U.S Forest Service in addition to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office patrols the Lower Salt River. To avoid legal trouble, keep in mind the following regulations of the river:
- No Glass or Styrofoam: These are strictly prohibited. If caught, they will be confiscated and you may receive a fine.
- Children 12 and under must wear life jackets
- Littering is illegal: In the past, “marshmallow wars” were a tradition, now, they are also considered littering as they can harm the wildlife.
- Respect the Wildlife: You must not approach the wild horses, and you are legally required to maintain a 50 feet distance.
- Adhere to the Rules of the Road: Drive the speed limit or the speed necessary to be reasonable and prudent and adhere to all road signs. No unsafe lane changes.
Many arrests arise from simple violations of these rules. Once you have been contacted for one of these reasons, it often leads to further investigation. Your first line of defense against legal trouble is staying compliant with the river rules.
