AZ Spring Training 2014: play it safe and avoid a DUI

Cindy CastilloDUI, AZ Events

Winter in Arizona. When the rest of the country is miserable, buried under feet of snow, and bundled up in layers upon layers, we are casually walking around in our sunny 70 degree weather. Naturally, this lends itself to having visitors come from across the nation to partake in the enjoyable weather.

AZ Spring Training 2014

However, in March, visitors come for not only the weather, but for the month long event that is known as the Cactus League Spring Training for major league baseball teams. While Spring Training can be one of the best vacations, it can also quickly turn into one of the worst if visitors are not careful. Arizona has some of the strictest DUI laws in the nation. During Spring Training season, police patrol the roads looking for the slightest driving imperfection. If arrested for a DUI, or any other crime, you will be given a court date to return to Arizona in a few weeks, even if you are a non-resident. If you are an out-of-state resident, you also face being locked up until you are seen by a judge (usually within 24 hours) as most police agencies have policies for non-resident suspects. A judge will normally require you to pay a bond to secure your presence at all future court dates. Obviously, this is not only an inconvenience, but also simply not feasible for some people. In those scenarios, you need an experienced criminal defense attorney to represent you and take care of things while you are out of state.

Take it easy or get a lift from someone else

If you choose to drink, consider one of these other modes of transportation: The Light-Rail, Uber cab (the iPhone app is awesome), the eco-friendly Discount Cab, or Lyft (ridesharing, make some new friends!).
