St. Patrick’s Day celebrates the introduction of Christianity to Ireland by Saint Patrick. It is celebrated on the 17th of March every year, which commemorates the death of the Saint. St. Patrick’s Day was considered a religious holiday in Ireland as it occurs during the Christian season of Lent. Irish families would attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon by eating Irish bacon and cabbage and dancing and drinking. Today, people around the world, especially the US celebrate this holiday. In 2012 it was estimated that about $245 million was spent on alcohol for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.

There are a number of ways you can join the celebration around the Phoenix area this Saturday, but remember to celebrate responsibly. Here are a few events:

• Pot of Gold Music Festival in Chandler

Remember, the luck of the Irish won’t keep you out of jail this St. Patrick’s Day if you engage in unlawful activities. Always remember to order an Uber or Lyft or find a designated driver if you plan on drinking. Also, be aware that DUI’s aren’t the only ticket given out on major drinking holidays. Indecent exposure, trespassing, aggravated assault, public intoxication, disorderly conduct, robbery, sexual assault, and open container violations are just a few charges that can result from alcohol impairment.
