Veteran’s Day originally started as Armistice Day in 1919, commemorating the day World War I officially ended in 1918. Armistice Day became an official holiday when approved by Congress in 1938. In 1954, after World War II, President Eisenhower declared Armistice Day as Veteran’s Day, a day to honor all who have served for our country. Veteran’s Day has been observed in the United States on November 11th every year since 1978. Prior to 1978, Veteran’s Day did not have a specific date; it bounced between November 11th and the fourth Monday in October. With over 23 million veterans in America, November 11th is our day to thank our veterans and show our appreciation for all of their efforts and sacrifice.

Ideas for giving back to Veterans

If you are interested in giving back to our veterans, here are a few ideas from the Corporation for National and Community Service:

  • Visit a wounded veteran at the hospital
  • Deliver a meal or care packages to veterans
  • Volunteer with an organization that provides therapy dogs to veterans, such as Canine Companions for Independence
  • Provide transportation for vets who are unable to travel to VA medical facilities on their own by volunteering with Disabled American Veterans
  • Say “Thanks!”
