Hi. My name is Cindy Castillo with Castillo Law.

Today, I’d like to talk to you about domestic violence offenses in the state of Arizona.

The state of Arizona has several different type of offenses that they can categorize as domestic violence. For example, you could be charged with criminal damage, disorderly conduct, assault or aggravated assault. If the crime qualifies as a domestic violence offense, then they will tag on the offense as being domestic violence.

Domestic violence is defined in the state of Arizona as any individual who has had a special relationship with the victim. For example, if you’ve been married to the person and you commit an offense against that person, that would be a domestic violence type of offense. If that person is your child, again, that could be a domestic violence offense. If you’ve lived with that person, that could qualify as a domestic violence offense. If you’ve had an intimate relationship with a person and you commit a crime against that person, that is a domestic violence offense.

It’s very important that you understand that if you have been charged with one of these crimes and they are domestic violence offenses, that there are many collateral consequences in addition to the criminal consequences to these offenses. For example, you might have a finger print card, that finger print card could be pulled as a result of the domestic violence offense, you could have your firearms privileges taken away as a result of the domestic violence offense.
